A monthly osteopathy MOT: maintenance without the myth

Some patients book regular osteopathy to stay moving. Steve Hall on what maintenance care is — and what it is not.

Walking a Hampshire country path

An MOT is a metaphor, not a service contract

Some clients describe a monthly visit as their MOT. They like leaving able to move more freely, and they like the advice between sessions. That is a reasonable personal choice. It is not a requirement, and it is not a subscription that “prevents ageing”.

When regular care makes sense

Physical jobs, high training loads, or a spine that stiffens predictably can justify a diary. I still reassess. If nothing is changing and you feel obliged to come, we should stop or space visits out.

Education is the point

I am more interested in you knowing what aggravates your pattern than in you needing me. Preventative care, in my clinic, means you leave with something you can do — not a mystery technique you cannot live without.
