After spinal surgery: when osteopathy can wait

Discectomy, decompression or fusion — Steve Hall on aftercare, surgeon clearance, and what osteopathy is not for.

Symptoms and what they can mean

Wound pain, stiffness from protection, and fear of moving are normal early on. New weakness, fever, or fluid from the wound is not “just healing”.

What we can do in clinic

I treat after surgery only with your surgeon or physio team’s timing in mind. Early weeks are theirs. Later, osteopathy may help neighbouring stiffness. I will not undo a fusion with enthusiasm.

Rehabilitation sits with physiotherapy

Deborah’s graded loading is often the right strand once you are cleared to exercise. We will not compete for the same appointment if a post-op protocol already exists.

Red flags and when to see your GP

Fever, wound breakdown, saddle anaesthesia or sudden neurological change is urgent care. Always.

This article is general information for people considering care at Health at Hart in Hartley Wintney. It is not a diagnosis, a prescription, or a promise of outcome. If you have sudden, severe or unexplained symptoms — including chest pain, unexplained weight loss, night pain, bowel or bladder changes, or a new neurological problem — seek urgent medical advice (NHS 111 or 999). UK osteopaths are regulated by the General Osteopathic Council. Counsellors named here are BACP-registered where stated. Always check with your GP or insurer if you are unsure whether a treatment is appropriate for you.
