Osteopathy

IT band irritation

Lateral knee pain in runners and cyclists — what the IT band actually is, and how osteopathy approaches it.

Symptoms and what they can mean

A sharp line on the outside of the knee at a predictable mileage. Foam-rolling the band until you cry is a popular hobby. It is not a treatment plan.

What we can do in clinic

The band is not a guitar string to be released once. Hip control, saddle height for cyclists, and cambered roads for runners matter. Hands-on work on the lateral thigh and hip can help you tolerate the loading programme.

Red flags and when to see your GP

True locking or a traumatic lateral ligament story is not ITB. Get it examined.
