Osteopathy
Clicking jaws, clenching and morning headaches — Steve Hall on how the temporomandibular joint, neck and cranial osteopathy can fit together in assessment.

The temporomandibular joints sit just in front of the ears. They work with the teeth, the chewing muscles, and the upper neck. Clenching at night, a new dental splint, or a stiff neck can all show up as jaw ache or clicking.
Osteopaths do not replace your dentist. If you have a broken tooth, an infection, or a sudden locked jaw, you need dental or medical care. Where the picture is muscular and mechanical, hands-on treatment to the neck, cranial region and jaw muscles can be part of a sensible plan for some people.
I will not promise to cure bruxism or to replace a night guard your dentist advised. I will look at whether the neck is adding load, and treat that if it is.
People often notice they wake with temple pain after a week of deadlines. Advice on screens, caffeine late at night, and a slightly lower pillow can sit alongside treatment. If headaches are new and severe, skip the osteopath and call NHS 111.
This article is general information for people considering care at Health at Hart in Hartley Wintney. It is not a diagnosis, a prescription, or a promise of outcome. If you have sudden, severe or unexplained symptoms — including chest pain, unexplained weight loss, night pain, bowel or bladder changes, or a new neurological problem — seek urgent medical advice (NHS 111 or 999). UK osteopaths are regulated by the General Osteopathic Council. Counsellors named here are BACP-registered where stated. Always check with your GP or insurer if you are unsure whether a treatment is appropriate for you.
