Osteopathy

Osteopathy during pregnancy

How osteopathy can support aches and changing posture in pregnancy, what Steve Hall assesses, and when you should speak to your midwife or GP first.

A changing body, not a fragile one

Pregnancy shifts your centre of gravity, ligament laxity and how you sleep. Low back pain, pelvic girdle pain and rib discomfort are common. Osteopathy is used by many women as a non-drug option to help them stay comfortable and mobile. It is not antenatal care and it does not replace your midwife.

How I adapt treatment

Positioning on the couch, the amount of pressure, and which techniques I use all change with trimester and with your symptoms. I will ask about your pregnancy history, any consultant involvement, and whether you have been advised to limit certain activities.

If you have vaginal bleeding, reduced fetal movements, severe headache, or calf swelling, you need obstetric or medical advice immediately — not an osteopathy appointment.

Pelvic girdle pain

Pain around the pubic joint or sacroiliac joints can make walking and turning in bed miserable. Assessment looks at how the pelvis and lumbar spine share load. Advice on sitting, getting out of the car, and pacing is as important as hands-on work. Outcomes vary; some people feel marked relief, others need a broader team including physiotherapy.

This article is general information for people considering care at Health at Hart in Hartley Wintney. It is not a diagnosis, a prescription, or a promise of outcome. If you have sudden, severe or unexplained symptoms — including chest pain, unexplained weight loss, night pain, bowel or bladder changes, or a new neurological problem — seek urgent medical advice (NHS 111 or 999). UK osteopaths are regulated by the General Osteopathic Council. Counsellors named here are BACP-registered where stated. Always check with your GP or insurer if you are unsure whether a treatment is appropriate for you.
