Shockwave therapy for tendon pain
What radial or focused shockwave is used for in physiotherapy — tendon pain, what the evidence is like, and how Deborah Bateson uses it at Health at Hart.
It is not an electric shock to the personality
Extracorporeal shockwave therapy delivers mechanical pulses to irritable tendon tissue. NICE has published interventional guidance for some tendinopathies. It can help selected people, usually alongside loading exercise, not instead of it.
What it feels like
Uncomfortable, brief, local. We agree a level you can tolerate. It is not appropriate over certain implants, in pregnancy, or over infection. I will screen you.
Cost in this clinic
Initial assessment with shockwave is £90; follow-up with shockwave £80. Without shockwave the fees are £80 and £70. We only add it when it fits the diagnosis.
