This is not a lifestyle slogan. There is a well-described relationship between sleep disruption and how the nervous system processes pain. If you only treat the joint and ignore the fact someone is waking four times a night, you are working with one hand.
I am careful here. A mattress can be unhelpful if it is hammock-soft or hotel-hard. It is rarely the only cause. More often it is the combination of a worn pillow, side-lying with a twisted neck, and an irritable lumbar segment. We talk about pillow height so the neck stays in line, and about getting out of bed by rolling to the side rather than sitting straight up like a sit-up.
Snoring with breath pauses, restless legs, or low mood that will not lift belongs with your GP — and, if it is the emotional load of pain, with counselling colleagues in this building. I will treat the musculoskeletal part and not pretend it is everything.
