Walking aids and pride

A stick is not a surrender — Steve Hall on osteopathy, hips and the Hampshire high street.

Walking a Hampshire lane with a stick

Symptoms and what they can mean

A limp you disguise by slowing down. Avoiding cobbles. A partner who has started carrying the shopping. Pride that is costing you the walk.

What we can do in clinic

Easing the hip, back and gait is the osteopathic part. Using a stick on the correct side so you can keep walking is the adult part. Deborah can train the strength. I will not mock a stick and I will not romanticise struggling without one.

Red flags and when to see your GP

A sudden inability to walk, or a hip that gives way with a crack — medical. A stick does not replace a fracture clinic.
